Orthopedic Treatment for Sports Injuries

Greiner Orthopedics provides orthopedic as well as non-surgical treatment for sports injuries at St. Mary’s Medical  & Ambulatory Surgery Center in Blue Springs, MO as well as MISH in Lenexa, KS. Dr. Greiner provides comprehensive care for conditions involving the hand, wrist, arm & shoulder as well as for the ankle, knee and hip. Our first goal is to helping our patients avoid surgery by utilizing regenerative medicine and non-surgical techniques when possible.  Whenever surgery can’t be avoided, we create a plan of care using an evidence-based approach for the proper treatment of our patients.  Our team provides care to patients and athletes from the entire Kansas City metropolitan area who are seeking expertise in areas such as hip preservation, cartilage restoration, shoulder and knee reconstruction.

Non-Surgical Procedures

Many Orthopedic problems can be successfully treated without surgery, as surgery is rarely the first line of treatment for most patients.

  • Sport Concussion Management: Our staff provides in-depth evaluation for our athletes, both student & professional, that includes a SCAT and VOMS evaluation combined with ImPACT computerized testing with tailored treatment plans for the athlete.
  • Viscosupplementation: This is a procedure that a thick fluid, hyaluronate, is injected into the joint to act like the naturally occuring fluid in human joints. The hyaluronate coats and lubricates the joint improving the lubricating properties of synovial fluid, reducing the pain from osteoarthritis of the knee. It generally improves mobility and provides better quality of life for patients awaiting or seeking to postpone total joint replacement.
  • Steroid Injections: A key component to non-surgical pain management and critical to successful long-term management of recurrent back and joint pain. These injections can offer immediate relief for severe pain. Steroid Injections are typically not a permanent solution and are most often used in combination with physical therapy.
  • Ultrasound Guided Hip Injections: For athletes that develop severe hip pain, hip joint injections use a mixture of anaesthetic to block the pain impulses and a steroid to reduce treatment can help resolve pain in the hip with precision. This is a conservative approach that can also help diagnose the source of the pain as well.
  • Plasma Rich Protein (PRP) Injections: Developed for professional athletes, PRP is your own body’s blood components which are centrifuged, concentrated, and injected into areas of chronic tendonitis. Most often used for tennis elbow, Achilles or patellar tendonitis; has shown great efficacy in areas which are not amenable to steroid injections.
  • Exertional Compartment Testing: A test for lower leg pain that is caused by increased pressure from exercise. This allows an accurate diagnosis for this condition.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

As today’s technology advancements increase, many joint disorders are able to be treated with a minimally invasive approach called arthroscopic surgery. In the past large incisions in the skin were made which could lead to unsightly scars as well as a longer recovery time. Arthroscopic surgery involves creating small “poke” incision in the skin, where a small pencil sized camera and specific medical instruments are inserted in the joint to see and effectively treat the problem. Greiner Orthopedics offers all arthroscopic options for shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, and ankle conditions.
